Small Kitchen Organization Ideas

small kitchen organization ideas for your countertops

Things are always heating up in the kitchen. It's where all the action is at in our homes. But tiny kitchens can be more of a hassle than endearing when you're turning up the heat. Putting some of these hacks into play will make all the difference, giving you more space in your tiny kitchen.

Island Living

If there is any way to swing it, add an island. There are a lot of amazing rolling islands, with shelving and even seating available. You can get them with various countertops, but one of the most popular is butcher block. You can find them in all sorts of sizes. They make the most of a small space.

Peg Boards

Take it back to the 1950s garage-style pegboard. You can paint the pegboard to match your decor and get all sorts of hooks to hang whatever you'd like-utensils, cups, pots, pans, dish towels, etc. Just find a spare wall, measure the space and cut it to fit. It is an easy install and an affordable solution.

Rails

Install rails, like towel bars, with S hooks. You can put these up over the stove or sink. You can find rails at places like Ikea and home improvement stores. With the stove, you can add your favorite utensils. Just make sure you don't hang plastic or cloth above the burners. I mean, most people rarely use more than the front right burner anyway, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Over the sink, you can hang scrub brushes, dish towels, and more.

Open Shelving

Wherever you have free space, add open shelving. Just be sure to make the shelving sturdy and attach it to the studs. This way, you can actually put weight on the shelves, making them practical. Home organization has to be practical to be effective; otherwise, what's the point?

Hanging Up

hanging pots helps a small kitchen

Hang up your pots and pans. If you don't have room for a pegboard, consider getting a pot rack and hanging your pots and pans. You will really appreciate the cabinet space this frees up for other things. Plus, it's just a great look.

Go Down Under

Are you a coffee or tea lover with too many coffee cups? Add cup hooks under your cabinets and hang your cups. Not only does it free up space, but it makes them easily accessible when you stumble into the kitchen in the morning looking to scrounge up your first up of joe.

Drawer Organizers

drawer organizers help to tidy up a small kitchen

Get yourself some drawers organizers. For all your drawers. They optimize your space and keep you free from clutter. If, at any time, the drawer starts to get cluttered again, you know it is time to purge and get a grip on your organization once again. There are many great options for drawer organizers that you can get practically anywhere, from Ikea and The Container Store to Walmart and Target. They are accessible so put them to work.

Shelf Risers

Use shelf risers or drawer inserts to maximize your space. They give you so much more room to place more items into small spaces. Usually, cabinet space is higher than we need, so use risers to make the most of it and stack multiple types of things in one single area.

Outer Space

You will need a step ladder, but don't be afraid to use the space above your cabinets for rarely used items. Yes, they will be a little difficult to reach, but you don't have to get out the ladder often, so it is well worth using the space and being slightly inconvenienced.

Cabinet Doors

Don't be afraid to use the inside of cabinet doors. With a few command strips you can turn the inside of your cabinet into something useful. Like hanging your measuring cups and spoons. Or your hot pads that would otherwise take up valuable drawer space. Or paint the inside with magnetic chalkboard paint, attach a little magnetic cup with chalk, and use it to take notes and make grocery lists.

Wrapping It Up

So there are some small kitchen organization ideas to get you started. There are plenty of larger kitchens where these hacks could be useful too. Larger spaces aren't always optimized for organized and practical living.
