DIY Small Laundry Room Organization Ideas

Not everyone has the luxury of a spacious laundry room with a folding station and built-in cabinets, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have options. These DIY small laundry room organization ideas will help you make the most of your small space and give you creative ideas for those with larger spaces, as well.

Drying Racks

Foldable drying racks can easily be stored between your washer and dryer and taken out only when in use. If you have zero room in your laundry area to set it up, take it to another room to let your clothes dry there. You can also set it up in the dining room, no one uses that space anymore anyway.

Open Shelves

Hang some open shelves above your washer and dryer or another wall. Just remember, they have to be accessible. If you can’t reach them, they really serve no purpose, you want to strive for function and not just looks.

Baskets

Baskets and crates (on your new open shelving) help keep things tidy. Use them to store cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, mismatched socks, clothes that need mending, etc.

Counter Space

If you have a front load washer and plan on keeping it that way, consider putting in a counter above your washer and dryer. This makes for a nice folding station or a place to treat stains. You need space to work, even in tiny spaces.

Behind the Door

Don’t waste the space on the back of the door. You can hang your mop, dustpan and broom, get a shoe rack and put cleaning supplies in it. Get creative, this space can hold a ton of stuff.

Stack It Up

If your space is super tiny, try a stackable washer and dryer. Stackable units are made for smaller loads but they are also cost and energy-efficient. Use the space you save for these other ideas!

Cabinet Space

If it’s in your budget, hang cabinets above your washer and dryer. There are some nice DIY options at places like Home Depot and Lowe’s. You do have to be slightly handy, but not by much.

Grouping Items

Save on space by grouping. Put like items with like, such as cleaning supplies together, creating a stain center, mending kit and ironing items. Make tiny spaces for each grouping where you can go to find what you need.

Laundry Bags

Save space by buying laundry bags with straps instead of laundry baskets. Get one for each person and let them take it back and forth with their clothes.

These small laundry room organizing ideas will help you make the most of your small space and have you almost enjoying the task of doing laundry. The only thing better is a group of little helpers that come in overnight and do it all for you.
